Reading Good, Better, Best: The "Pro" Writer (Volume IV)

After being at RWA Nationals this year, and realizing that I'm never going to win a Golden Heart, I started automatically looking at the RITAs. Of course, I'm not yet PAN-eligible, but I will be someday. And I'm going to have to start setting my sights on the RITA.

My friend Stephanie was nominated for a RITA, and wow did she deserve it. Absolutely amazing book. I have a friend who self-published that deserves to get a RITA for her book (and I hope she can enter it, because it's great). But apart from Stephanie's and Barbara Samuels' books, I've never intentionally read a RITA-nominated or RITA-winning book yet.

But if I'm going to take myself seriously as a writer (i.e. my PRO WRITER blog series), then I need to set my sights on the next level. For me, of course, that's PAN and the RITA. I may not be a Golden Heart winner, but I was a Genesis finalist (which is the ACFW equivalent to the Golden Heart) in 2010, and I can be a RITA-winner. Or at least a RITA-nominee.

So this year, as part of my PRO WRITER series, I'm going to attempt to read all of the RITA winning books from 2012. Here's a list of the books.

Best First Book
First Grave on the Right
by Darynda Jones

Contemporary Series Romance
Doukakis's Apprentice
by Sarah Morgan

Contemporary Series Romance: Suspense/Adventure
Soldier's Last Stand
by Cindy Dees

Contemporary Single Title Romance
Boomerang Bride
by Fiona Lowe

Historical Romance
The Black Hawk
by Joanna Bourne

Inspirational Romance
The Measure of Katie Calloway
by Serena Miller

Novel with Strong Romantic Elements
How to Bake a Perfect Life
by Barbara O'Neal (already read--fantastic as always)

Paranormal Romance
Dragon Bound
by Thea Harrison

Regency Historical Romance
A Night to Surrender
by Tessa Dare

Romance Novella
I Love the Earl
by Caroline Linden

Romantic Suspense
New York to Dallas
by J.D. Robb

Young Adult Romance
Enclave
by Ann Aguirre

Whew! That's quite a list. Twelve of the best books in romance from 2012, according to other PAN members. That's a high calling. So let's see what I can do about it. Since I've already read the Barbara O'Neal, I'll just start right in with the best first book. So after I finish the books I have to review for this month, I'll sink my teeth into First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones. And we'll see how it goes.

I'll keep you posted. Don't worry. :)

My goodness. How long do you think it'll take to read all those books? I think it's a great idea.

I haven't been to National in a long while. I need to pencil it on my calendar to attend sometime within the next few years.

Rebecca Lynn, I've read a lot of good books that won RITA's so I am boldly suggesting beside Barbara Samuel who is the goddess.

Darynda Jones, Pamela Morsi who put out an all time favorite (non-winner maybe it wasn't entered) Red's Hot Honky Tonk Bar. It is contemporary and so well written.
Cheryl Reavis has written a couple amazing books but I forget just now which won the RITA. Marilyn Pappano has written some incredible stuff. You might try an nonwinner, His Overnight Alibi but her books until her mother got sick were great reads. She has gone with a new publisher and will have a line of Margarita books coming out. Kristin Hannah has amazed me.

Well I probably got off track from RITA winning books but these authors are just amazing.
